Attorney Sungwoo (Goni) Kim of SOLARIS contributed an expert column to Solar Today, a publication specializing in renewable energy, titled "[Solar Issues Through the Lens of Law] Energy Transition and Shared Prosperity: Toward a Legal Framework for 'Sunlight Income'."
In the column, Attorney Kim analyzed pilot cases of "sunlight income," a resident-participation, income-sharing model that is emerging as a new alternative for solar projects, and identified the key legal issues in rolling it out nationwide. He proposed specific legislative tasks and institutional solutions, including extending the period of temporary permits to use farmland for other purposes under the Farmland Act, clarifying the requirements for resident-participation projects and the standards for sharing income, and securing the legal enforceability of benefit-sharing agreements.
Building shared value with local residents and navigating a complex regulatory environment are key to the success of renewable energy projects. Drawing on its expertise in energy and environmental regulation, including solar, SOLARIS will continue to provide legal services that let both power producers and local communities prosper together.
