Direct PPAs in Korea: Where They Stand and the Road Ahead

Attorney Sungwoo (Goni) Kim of SOLARIS contributed an expert column to Solar Today, a Korean publication specializing in solar and renewable energy, titled "[Solar Issues Through the Lens of Law] Direct PPAs in Korea: Where They Stand and the Road Ahead."

In the column, Attorney Kim assessed the state of Korea's direct power purchase agreement (PPA) system as global carbon-neutrality demands and the RE100 campaign spread. He analyzed in depth the practical barriers holding direct PPAs back, including opaque network usage fees and supplementary settlement charges and complex contract structures among the parties involved.

He also proposed concrete legal and policy measures to grow the market, including a transparent cost structure, a larger role for renewable electricity retailers, and tax benefits and other incentives.
