Attorney Soojin (Tommy) Park of SOLARIS contributed a column to the industry publication Industry News setting out practical data protection strategies for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Following a series of large-scale data breaches, Korea is moving to raise the maximum fine for personal data leaks to as much as 10% of total revenue. In response, Attorney Park proposed three key measures to help SMEs, which often lack the budget and dedicated security staff to defend against cyber threats, minimize legal risk and stay in business.

In the column, Attorney Park stressed the importance of collecting no more personal data than necessary, preventing ransomware damage through offline backups, and thoroughly documenting security checks and training. The column is notable for offering an effective, cost-efficient compliance framework that SMEs can put in place immediately.
