Attorney Soojin (Tommy) Park of SOLARIS presented, in a column for the industry publication Industry News, practical ways for SMEs to comply with the Serious Accidents Punishment Act (SAPA) at minimum cost and with maximum effect.
Since SAPA began applying in full to workplaces with fewer than 50 employees, many SMEs have struggled with what compliance means in practice. Attorney Park stressed three core measures that can be put into practice on site right away, before investing in complex and costly systems: introducing a "risk assessment" in which the workplace identifies its own hazards, holding a five-minute "Tool Box Meeting (TBM)" before work every day, and having the responsible executive "personally approve safety matters and allocate a safety budget."
The column gives SME executives facing the new rules clear guidance on defending against legal liability while building a genuine safety culture in the workplace.
SOLARIS will continue to provide strong legal advice on SAPA and occupational safety so that corporate clients can operate safely and sustainably in an uncertain regulatory environment.
